The rat race is a seemingly endless pursuit with little reward or purpose. There is always somebody ahead. Ever pause to ponder, why we need to push, shove, nudge, elbow and shoulder to overtake one, then the next, then another, only to be overtaken by fellow humans or rather “rats” who stayed alive at our finishing line.
The trouble with the rat race is that even if you win, you're still a rat. —Lily Tomlin
The Rat race starts right from childhood. It starts off with the parents of a 3 year old being interviewed in order to decide who the better “rat” is for entering school. Once the poor rat is in, the life aka the rat race begins.
“Top of the class, bottom of the class, you’ve failed, passed, topper, failure,” Come on. It’s (rat) just a 4-year old. That’s called “killing softly”. This race goes on for about 12 long and gruelling years, and then we’re in “The Tenth”. We’re told, “Just do well here and you are set for life.” Little “the rats” know. They fall in the ditch and it’s like an abyss. Soon “The Tenth” is in the past and up comes “The Twelth”. The greatest test, yet! There are boards, there are competitive, and then there is this new found urge to do ‘different’ things ;) Hell, that’s competitive and leaves everybody rattled, so much so, that we don’t realise that it’s just the sign of things to come. The thing told to us about being “set for life” is simply a deception created to hide the ultimate truth concerning life; life is a rat race.
Perhaps, the more intense the race and the more it is contested, the greater is the claim to an elevated level of development. By any reckoning, it appears to be a primitive stage, rather than an evolved stage of civilization.
It is a known fact that a very long time ago we were primates. Even though this was millions of years ago, we still live the “primate” way!
Primates are hierarchical. The higher up the hierarchy one is the better the chances of survival. We compete with each other over access to food, education, jobs, “mates” etc. Available resources rarely meet the demands made by wild primates or indeed humans and thus competition is a way of life.
"No matter what you do in the rat race, success is not guaranteed, but if you do nothing failure is" —Paul Ulasien
Subsequently there is college, which is definitely the best time of anyone’s life, where the ultimate “rat race” ensues. Session exams are always a pain. So is the week long studying before the exams and “that” week of the exams. There is an explicit race in these exams. The race can be incredibly like chalk and cheese for different rats that are like chalk and cheese. Some are racing to come amongst the toppers and beat their “friends”. While others are racing to fail in as many (or less) subjects as their immediate “adversaries”.
Nevertheless, the more interesting race starts a week before the exams, when the “elite” rats are running around to gather notes/books to get them photocopied. They’re often willing to pay extra to get their hands on the photocopies, just in time, and that is as early as a day before the exam. Yes, these rats are that elite.
School, college then what follows is obvious, a JOB.
First, as always, the rats have to race again. Compete against thousands of people. Those who get in, think for a moment that they’re at the finishing line. “Set for life.” Yes? No! The line just got further. Now the race is of a different kind, a marathon. Earlier rats used to crib about “not seeing” themselves work in a 9 to 6 environment, citing reasons like “it’s hectic”. LOL. Well, that is true, isn’t it? It’s more like 9 to 12 now, with atleast 12 hours obligatory.
“Raceism” or more popularly the rat race is not just limited to the professional front. Enter Facebook! We toil late into the night, unleashing an endless stream of status updates and tweets. Then there are always those farms, fishes, homes, mafias to brag about. I once read that this ploy by virtual rats is just an attempt to keep themselves relevant, desirable and in. Well, I think that’s a little offensive. Anyhow, if it is true, then it’s a race, the virtual rat race.
It turns out virtual life is less about connectivity than self-branding.
People are like lost sheep that have gone astray and don't know who they are, so instead of searching who they really are, they submit to society and do whatever is in. Be it related to career or “love” life or this virtual life!
At the end of the day, there is just one outcome of ‘The rat race’; fear. Fear of outcomes debilitates us. We begin dreading futile and little things in life. Moreover, that in turn leads to obsessing about the future and obsession is always a bitch! That will make anyone compulsive, cranky and unhappy. Not sad, but unhappy.
There are always reasons, mostly material, to be unhappy, Raceism being the major. The smart thing to would be to stop agonizing over them, especially when they are inevitable. Not only must one want to be happy but it is the very purpose of life. In other words, it is okay to be happy. It is okay to want to be happy.
God, we have been told, helps those who help themselves
`Raceism’ has come to stay in the world.
well written yaar. who'd have thought with almost just a third of the life behind us, a few would've started wondering " What the hell have i gotten myself into" or "Is it how it's gonna be for the rest of my life..."
ReplyDeletesorry for my candid opinion but the blog dint offer any new perspective over the issue we already know and have been afflicted with......i liked the "elite" rat part :).......let me add some more to your blog........
ReplyDeletethe favorite topic of discussion among rats as the result comes is......this rat studied only 2 hours....while that rat had been doing it since 2 days.....its as if the mental capacity is directly related to the Marks he gets and inversely to the Time he spends......Now I would change Mental capacity in the left side of this equation to "Ability to perform in a rat race"........i have even seen people who claim afterwards how superior they are since they studied less.......sometimes wanted to puke on their face.......and of course they get an elevated status in the college society.......there is respect for this rat among other rats......HE is the "bully" rat.....he can now dictate the lives of other Rats.......In no time he becomes the "King" rat
The point I am trying to make is......the Rat Race can never lead to your intellectual elevation....but its a common practice......and it is bound to go on......im afraid
i am impressed with the stream of thought. It is actually the way society has evolved. You have taken a biological progression- you've talked about how the kid grows into an adult. i would take a diff route- you could talk chronologically. from civilisations, to governments to religions to kingdoms to countries....

ReplyDeleteNice comment.. Only "elite" rats can appreciate other elite ones ;)
Reveal your identity.
yup... totally agree.. life's a big rat marathon.... obsession is a bithc!
ReplyDeletegood one... keep it coming!!
true enough!
ReplyDeleteWell much has been said about the rat race in the past and it still continues to haunt the young impressionable minds of today but lets put a few things into perspective and spare a thought. Do we really have a choice?? With a
ReplyDeletemassive population of a billion plus, where every year more than a million students graduate from different fields from a plethora of universities what are the chances of survival of an underperforming kid(in this case the slowest among the rat pack). There certainly aren't enough jobs out there to accommodate more than a million graduates every year and keep them satisfied at the same time. What option do our parents have but to push us to our limits without which (frankly speaking)most of us would't strive hard enough.
What i do agree with is the fact that somewhere in this mad rush we do lose out on our sense of individuality, our identity. People hesitate to opt anything that's even remotely 'off the beaten track' and even if they dare to they're not backed up with the same kind of encouragement and support they would have drawn had they opted for something considered a safe bet(no matter how cliched). What people(including our parents) don't realize is that by running a race on their chosen track(a track they feel they belong to) they are increasing their chances of emerging as a winner one day. I believe all of us should run a race, a personal one, but only on a track chosen by us(no matter how offbeat), that way you wouldn't ever feel like stopping, you wouldn't ever want to look back, you wouldn't ever want the boundary/finishing line to be defined, as you and only you would be the master of your track.
*master of your own track(destiny).
ReplyDeletehmmm.. yesterday a guy asked me.... so are you studying?? and i had this condescending attitude.. no i am working dude. So what work are you doin was his next question. i am the asst. manager marketing....blah..blah.. i went on and on..
ReplyDeleteso are you like a sales man??? technically yes .. itz a sales job...
a smile crossed his face.. and then his next question made me ponder....did you lyk always wanted to be a sales man??? Wudnt you wanna do something else in your lyf like sing, or sketch or dance .....
now when i think abt it... i am already a victim of the rat race... i dnt really knw what am i doin with my life... i think i am goin thru my quater life crisis or somethin...
i quite agree with what anurag has said.. u should follow ur dreams and do what you really wanna do... but for doin that one needs to muster a lot of courage...
i enjoyed reading your blog and ironically am sure every Indian can at some level connect with what you have had to say.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the rat race just narrows down perceptions and makes u you have your own illusionary idea of how the world works. It automatically keeps us away from so many opportunities and unfortunately the rat race never lets diversity flourish.
I also loved the perspective anurag gave about this and how population screws up so many things but at the same time I feel like even way back when population wasnt this huge indians still had this deeply engendered attitude where taking the middle path has always been considered the safest. We have never been or bred too many adventurers as a society.
I hope our generation doesnt encourage the next to fall into the same trap we did and makes sure that attitudes change in the time to come...
nyc work....absolutely loved it..flawless writing...it had its moments...and ya it was nothing but tha truth...big thumbs up...
ReplyDelete@All: Thank you for the comments.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with all your views. We are generally too scared to try something which is not "mainstream"! Due to which we're doing what we see around us, and not what we're supposed to be doing.
nice article and well articulated....keep it up
ReplyDeleteVarun!...very well written!...What can I say that I didn't tell you while chatting!!...mmm...now that I stop to really think about it, the rat race starts from the early conception....only one spermatozoid for just one egg!...only the stronger ones will get near and only ONE will enter...so It's almost part of us....Contest it's all what we have been doing from the very beginning...
ReplyDeleteAnd then...All of that increases when parents, teachers and other social actors get involved in the process... the only thing that I can do in this moment is to ask myself where are we in this process, what is our role?...can we change that or will we always end up acting as the mass do?
Just the other day I read a book on a very particular education tradition, the book is called Summerhill by AS Neill, he believes that children should be educated based on the "happiness and love" I made a lot of sense to me that!... because we all get lost in the process of education!...
I don't know if you are familiar with the educational system in Germany…that is crazy!.....Children go the elementary level ("Grundstufe") which is ended at the age of 9...after that the teachers, according to the academical achievements, decide whether the children have o not talent to go to university.... so there are three choices:
1) Go to the Realshule which is something like a technical school for not important activities. They receive a certificate
2) Go to the Hochschule which is a technical school for more important activities you get like a diploma but no degree and classes are mixed with practical activities… a nurse will be educated in this system.
3) Go to the Gymnasium which is a more academical education. Here ppl is educated to sit the exams to get to a good university and get a degree!
As you may notice, the whole idea is based on competition…parent expect their kids to be the best at school as for them not to be chosen into the “lower steps (caste, I didn’t want to use that word)” of education… kids are medicated and then present alterations due to stress levels….
My idea of education is that the children should be free and happy in order to stimulate his/her independence…and decision/making…
What are we creating?... monsters?...We are to blame for the increased level of violence in the schools…because we have created certain model of behavior and that creates rage….
We, adults are less happy with the time and that is making our children less happy as well….I think we should start to looking in ourselves…and rediscover our real nature…Only with that we will be happy…
Varum you brought up a very interesting topic…As most of us reading and posting here are young, I say we have two options, either change this absurd notion that we have grown up with or (with the responsibility that I have as a woman) not bringing kids to the world!
Is this post not ironic, considering the sort of rat race we will be running over the next couple of years? ;)
ReplyDeleteYes yes I totally concur! But, what to do? :)
ReplyDeleteWell, i wonder what you would have to say regarding all this if you had to write it now in IIM ;-)
ReplyDeleteDon't you just love Sibal, who has been trying to change things about in our education system. Perhaps, he brings to our attention that the 'race-ism' phenomenon is a matter of conditioning and programming in our culture. Children are taught to be part of this madness.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt Darwin coined the much quoted 'survival of the fittest' paradigm; but don't forget there's new research to dispute that, and which perhaps looks at mediocrity paving the way to survival. That is to say that the race is not about beating the opponent but about being 'visible'. Which is exactly the point of social networking as suggested by the likes of Henry Jenkins.
Mediocrity, here, is used in a sense that is in line with negotiation. Where by the 'rat' has evolved to challenge the scientist in a way that allows the rat to survive, be it in a cage, and be fed timely and moreover be safe from predators. Humans may call it propaganda, PR or 'jugaad'. It's evolution -- as Lacan said 'the street finds its own use'.
In a purely Darwanian sense, the opponent obvioulsy wants you to believe you're in the rat race. An idea clearly upheld by an individualistic society. The question is who is the opponent? - It's an ideology. One that is forced upon our youth, from whom their power of choice is taken away. It's a cyclical semiotic process. Ironically, the only way out is democracy, by letting people decide what they want for themselves.

ReplyDeleteCome again..? :P
